As Rome was finally caving
with northerners invading
Around 500 AD

The Middle Ages (wow, it's medieval)

"Dark Ages" for European people
and the times were medieval

Saints, churches and Gothic cathedrals (cathedrals)
Monks learning in monasteries (we study!)
Pope Urban II's Crusaders
ridding Seljuk Turks from the land that's holy (it's holy!)

Vassals pledging lords their allegiance
had serfs that worked on their fiefdoms (it's feudal)
It's a system of feudalism
Kings give the nobles land to keep the peace and defend them

Taking oaths of homage and fealty
Knights follow a Code of Chivalry
Like Roland did during the reign
Of Charles the Great - Charlemagne

Charlemagne, the Frankish conqueror
crowned Holy Roman Emperor
made Saxons be Christian
built a school in Aachen for
education to flourish, unifying Europe
He's a "founding father" like his grandpa
Charles Martel, "The Hammer",
defended Gaul, at Tours he held the Muslim Moors off
Too bad the Frankish Kingdom got divided
by his great grandson, Louis the Pious

Then Northmen from Scandinavia (we're Norsemen)
plundered and founded Normandy (we're Vikings!)
absorbed French language and culture,
crossed the English Channel to win at Hastings (The 60's)

William led that invasion
The Conqueror, King of England (bye Harold!)
His Normans and the Saxons
mixed language, now that's what I'm speaking (in English)

Back then you peasant serfs needed to mind your manors
Your crops were the lord's, and you'd never be land owners
just like King John would tax unfairly and demand more
His vassals couldn't (sic) stand it no more

In 1215 they made him sign a "Great Charter"
It would protect their rights, known as the Magna Carta
Inspiring governments from India to America
with equal rights, fair trial, and the rule of law

It's good thing, 'cause Europe's such a small continent
With kingdoms cramped up like nuns in a convent
Crusades open doors to Eastern goods and trade spreads
but bring home rats with fleas and the bubonic plague spreads

The Black Death lowered Europe's population
Over one-third died of The Great Plague
God's anger was thought to be reason
They'd persecute the Jews like they did in the Crusades

and Eastern Orthodox Christians
with no pope since the Great Schism
Really ("eventually" in the case of the first crusades- a good topic
for discussion!)
hated what the Crusades did
Like the Muslims getting driven out of Spain- Reconquista

But to get into
the Iberian Peninsula
You'll have to cross the Pyrenees or
go on a Mediterranean Sea tour

These mountain chains keep European regions separated
The Caucasus and Ural ranges block them off from Asia
But their rivers, fjords and waterways enable trading
to grow their wheat they cleared the trees out, that's deforestation

and you know how fertile the North European plain is
with temperate Atlantic air, the climate makes for good vacations
It's a rich continent, but to leave the Dark Ages
They'll need a "Renaissance", and a church "Reformation"

Saints, churches and Gothic cathedrals (cathedrals)
Monks learning in monasteries (make copies!)
Pope Urban II's crusaders
Taking back Jerusalem with the Byzantines (Byzantines)

Vassals pledging lords their allegiance
had serfs that worked on their fiefdoms (it's feudal)
It's a system of feudalism
Kings give the nobles land to keep the peace and defend them
